Analysis of A Sonnet for the Down Low

The glimpse of you that gained my eye was bathed
In golden glimmers of sunlight-streaked sweat.
Atop the hill you stood erect and raised
Your arms and stretched your length from hands to feet.
A vision to behold, Adonis come
Again, you are blind to your own beauty.
If I could dare to touch you and succumb
To my own desires, my world would be free.
Yet freedom’s price would come with tears and loss
And your sweat would sting like holy water
To a vampire.  For family, I gloss
Over dreams of love.  I am not a liar.
I keep my distance so they cannot see
That the she I talk about is a he.

About this poem

I am a gay man, and a poet. I always say I write a sonnet a year to keep me honest. Thiss one just formed itself during pride month. I kept thinking of the people who were celebrating in secret..
