Fratello
Otis Cotton 1983 (HARLEM NY)
I once met a man who lived by the sea
The currents shifting
Waves pushing him
further towards the shore
Life is an adventure
Not a bore
He assured me
If you believe in yourself
You can change the narrative
And so I closed my eyes
And made a wish
In that space
Someone else blew out
My candles
When life is too hard to handle
Alone
The company we keep
Keeps our backbone straight
Food on our plate
Reality when we seek to escape
Pain
Voices that echo the same response
Be your own cheer leader
So I won't await a response
From the people that never
Never truly loved me
Instead
With a clear mind
Clear head
I forge ahead
Thank you to that man that
Lives by the Sea
Who sees me for me
Not with eyes of pity
But eyes of empathy
My fratello
