She Put Herself Last
Danielle Perkins 1979 (Arkansas)
She put herself last
For too many years
To help those she loved
Both far and near.
Without a second thought,
It was always a yes.
Sometimes she wondered,
How she became so blessed.
Suddenly, it changed
Her vision became clear
And her eyes, those eyes,
Began to fill with tears.
How could she be so blind?
How could she not see?
All this time,
She thought she was loved.
Turns out, that's not it
That's not at all what it was.
They used her for convenience,
When they had no one else.
She was never a priority,
Like dust on a shelf.
They play the victim,
Say it's all her.
She's too sensitive,
They can't hear her words.
They don't see her pain,
Or the brokenness inside
It's written all over her face,
She can no longer hide.
Why is she so unimportant
To those she loves most?
Maybe, tomorrow they will see,
When she's only a ghost.
About this poem
This poem expresses exactly how I feel at this moment. I am not a priority, I am a convenience and I am finally realizing that as much as I love someone, I can't make them love me back.
