The Sparrow

Subhash Chand 1966 (Agra)

Sparrow, O my tiny sparrow!

Visit my cozy home again.

I will give you things you need-

Water, twigs, seeds and grain.

When I was a little child,

You used to visit my home.

Why then you left your nest,

For a distant land to roam?

Perhaps we snatched from you,

Your natural habitat green.

No gardens, plants and trees

Left for you to alight and preen.

Polluted air is wreaking havoc

In your soaring sustained flight.

What good then is left for you

In this expanding urban blight.

For your long-awaited comeback,

We are correcting all our wrongs.

Come, come my pretty bird again

To sing your lovely, morning songs.

About this poem

I wrote this poem about the sparrow because this bird, which was once a common sight in homes, has become so uncommon now that it is no longer seen in our surrounding neighbourhood. In this poem, I yearn for its comeback to places where it once used to visit in bygone days.
