Only the Blind Can See
Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)
When it’s dark, I can see the light coming toward me.
And yet when its light, I find, I cannot see.
What would you say to a blind man who tells you,
That even in darkness, he’ll be there to help you?
Would you tell him he’s crazy or stupid or dumb?
Where is the light you can see coming from?
Does it come from your own understanding or grace?
Can you see it when you’re looking right into his face?
When God comes to say: Here I am; I have found you!
Then if you’re not blind, would His words not astound you?
In your pride wouldn’t you say: I’ve never been lost?
If you can’t see His mercy and grace, what’s the cost?
The cost of your error is great; this is true!
So, don’t turn your back on the sun when it’s new!
The wisdom you’ll gain is itself a reward!
And also, you won’t be cut down by the Sword!
