Regret
Regret is a feeling, that lingers so long.
Like a reverberating melody, of a sad, sad song.
A burden that weighs heavy upon my bleeding heart.
Tearing into my tortured soul, tearing it completely apart.
It’s the words I’ve left unsaid, and the actions left un-done.
The moments that I’ve missed and the battles left un-won.
I’d like a chance to turn back time, if only that I could’ve.
To avoid the past that I have scribed, to go do what I should’ve.
“What if’s” every day paralyzed my busy mind.
I was afraid to upset anyone, so I kept staying kind.
Kind to everyone around me, even if I shouldn’t.
Even the thought of confrontation, I just, I just couldn’t.
I regret being so passive, so shy and disconnected.
Someone who would do anything, just to try to be accepted.
While trying to please everyone around, no matter how hard.
I’ve lost what it means to be me, and my soul has been scarred.
Regret is a teacher, but it’s tough love at best.
A reminder to live my life carefree, and to live it unstressed.
So let me learn from my past, so my present can forget.
So I can try to live in the moment, without any more regret.
About this poem
Going through a year of self reflection and growth and I’ve reflected on the choices made (or not made) to get me to this point in my life. A friend recently asked me if I’ve ever had any regrets and without thought I responded yes, nearly every day. I have so many regrets in my life I wish I could undo.
