work makes free
Markus Kiener 1960 (Regensdorf)
I know, I must leave this firm
and I know I must leave it fast
before I’m too old for changes
changes won't come here to last
there is too much trouble and strife
I can’t stand them anymore
these aren’t the working conditions
I once were looking for
indeed, I have had enough
of what I daily hear and see
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
I know, when I once have gone
I will be gone for good
nothing will ever make me say
I would have stayed if there was brotherhood
the firm is anything else but modern
for workers and employees
everybody here is frustrated
depressed and feels ill at ease
but I don’t care for anybody
who doesn’t care for me
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
I know that my job
will be given to someone new away
a nice story will make him feel to say
“oh, what happens to me today”
the management does everything
that ever can be done
they turn every new and unused one
into an old and misused one
even if anybody grows cold
he will hardly start to think and see
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
I have had enough
of all these schemes day after day
everybody is devious and lying
everybody says “everything is okay”
no matter, what happens
something is always going on
even if it’s only the time
that is like the dead to bemoan
therefore, I know, must be away
before I’m part of the tragedy
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
what firm I’m going to work for
don’t ask me, I don’t know
it can only get better and better
this is what I know - I hope so
whoever you are working for
don’t be naive and make any claim
firms and working conditions in the end
are everywhere the same
so, there is really nothing ideal for anybody
who thinks like me
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
well, work makes free
when you don’t think about it
so don’t ask me about freedom
I don’t mean to talk about it
freedom can’t be real
when you don’t know to the core
what do you want to be free of
and what do you want to be free for?
I wanted to be free of forces and free of freethinking
but I failed as you can see
and I always thought
it was work that makes you free
