Little Orange Monkey
Remember that time at the movies,
When I picked the worst one playing?
"I let you choose despite the reviews," you said,
"Why did you do that?" I asked, surprised.
"Because," you smiled, meeting my eyes,
Gently kissed my lips, and held my hand.
As we walked to that store for deodorant,
Because I needed it.
You laughed, no judgment, just us.
There, a little orange monkey caught our eye,
reminding us of the film as we passed by,
So we bought it, along with a '90s trivia game.
At the bar, you curated songs for us.
Country love tunes, hip-hop rap,
A twinkle in your eye, a hand on my lap,
making me feel secure as you quizzed me.
Turns out I'm a '90s trivia queen,
Because I triumphed.
You teased about letting me win,
Though we both knew the truth.
You said you'd let me win forever
If the prize was a kiss.
And oh, how you kissed me,
Shades of warm pink colliding against the sun,
The brightest sunrise in the dead of night,
lost in the moment, me and you.
In our little world, no one else around,
Until someone asked about that little orange monkey.
We shared its story, which led to ours,
"How cute," they said.
And once again, I melted into your embrace
As they walked away,
Just us, the little orange monkey, and a moment in time.
