Sa toux qui retentit comme une plainte humaine
Secoue obstinément son grand corps accablé ;
Mufle bas, jarrets mous, sur sa paille de blé,
Il n’a mangé ni bu depuis une semaine.
En vain, à petits pas, un enfant le promène
Et chasse les taons lourds dont il est harcelé,
Sa toux qui retentit comme une plainte humaine
Secoue obstinément son grand corps accablé.
Il attriste l'étable et la cour du domaine
Et le prolongement de l'écho désolé
Répercute au plus creux du manoir isolé
Plein des vagues effrois que le Minuit ramène,
