Au bord de l’étang, le petit renardeau
Suit à pas de loup sa mère la renarde,
Qui s’en va guettant, sournoise et goguenarde,
Le canard sauvage ou bien la poule d’eau.

— Des nuages bruns couvrent d’un noir bandeau
Le soleil sanglant que l’âpre nuit poignarde.
Au bord de l’étang, le petit renardeau
Suit à pas de loup sa mère la renarde.

Sur un bois flottant qui lui sert de radeau,
Soudain la rôdeuse en tremblant se hasarde ;
Et moi, curieux et ravi, je regarde,
Caché par les joncs comme par un rideau,
Au bord de l’étang le petit renardeau.
