Autism
The only sound drifting
through the late afternoon,
is the leaves rustling
through the long branches
of the dutch elm trees.
I watch you run through
knee-deep grass,
your outstretched arms
silhouetted by the dying sun.
Your shadow lengthens
as you weave away from me.
I want to pull you close
but you are twirling too fast.
The sun dips quickly
behind a cloud,
leaving you in the shadows.
I want to reach out
and rescue you
from the darkness,
but you are lost in the dancing
that makes up your world.
My son, I don't understand autism
but I try every day to understand you.
(April is Autism Month, we really need to find out what is causing this terrible disease. I wrote this for a friend for Autism month)
