Snapshots
Sun burning through my cotton shirt
I grab my notebook, walk outside
and settle on the gritty couch
with flaming thoughts of how I've tried
to put myself in words, in speech
instead of dreaming
on the beach.
My pencil sails across the page
sometimes pausing, scrawling blind
tearing visions from my head
leaving skin and limbs behind
until I am a floating soul
letting go
of my control.
I remember every smile and frown
the twisted days that made me tire
and bite my lip at memories
of dancing freely, blood on fire
releasing all my fear to dive
and for a screaming moment
alive.
My heart is bursting with their faces
people, places I once knew
I loved them each in different ways
before I held my tongue and flew
into the swirling void of strife
and hope, and pain
and breathless life.
The veins that cross my young arms
carry pictures of the eras dawned
the moaning of the violin
the splash of water, far beyond
my shaking feet where they stand now
leaving prints
someway, somehow.
Breathing ragged, light eyes bright
spirit rushing out in waves
a flood of clear and icy truth
hits me, hollow as a cave
yet brimming with the epic peak
of deepest tears
that finally leak.
The snapshots of my jumbled life
racing mind and scraps of sky
are stepping stones for what's ahead
and finding where my comforts lie
but in the eye of every storm
my sturdy roots
will keep me warm.
