Transportation
Todd Vanisacker 1969 (Michigan)
With reverence bordering
on religious trepidation
he took the old tome
down from the shelf,
brushed a bit of dirt
off the binding,
and opened the cover.
Pausing for a moment,
he took a deep breath
and slowly let it out,
then softly,
at almost a whisper,
he began to read.
Words and phrases
trickled off his lips,
and within minutes
he was transported,
whisked away
to a new land.
Green meadows, tall trees,
off in the distance,
a castle.
Surely in the dungeon
would be a princess
in durance vile.
Ah, a chance to be heroic,
to ride to the rescue
and set right
what has gone wrong.
Maybe there was
an evil usurper on the throne
lording over the peasants
or a dark sorcerer,
brewing evil spells
to rule the land.
The was exhilarating,
so many possibilities.
Would he rescue the princess,
and win her heart?
Be captured by a false monarch
or his evil sorcerer?
Team up with a brave knight,
or go it alone?
He couldn’t wait to find out.
As he turned the page
and continued reading,
he wished, as he always did
when the story was particularly good,
that reality would match
his imagination,
and he really could walk into
the world of his book.
