We Of Colored Skin
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
We of colored skin.
Living under conditions,
Only we know to live in.
Should not allow,
Ourselves to become victims.
Separated and divided.
As children seeking,
Individual attention.
To appease the doing of those who wish,
Witnessing to see us all...
Igniting to invite infighting,
Amongst each other for less than we have.
As they stand back and laugh.
While we unconsciously,
Concentrate more...
On a repeated past that has gone.
But has stay to last,
To forget our contributions...
Made to obtain a greatness.
A history rewritten intended not to mention,
The truth and facts of this...
From positions they sit in.
Done to censor and have believe,
Nothing we did for them to do...
Was not a necessity.
To remove from the minds of the youth.
Successfully to prove,
Themselves to be more the contributors...
Of a greatness to experience,
Entitlements given freely.
And we are immigrant leechers,
Seeking from them our needs!
We of colored skin,
Of different ethnicities.
Knowing who has been dependent,
Of our diverse talents and skills.
To create for all various opportunities received
Left to leave us behind,
As useless peasants to have this believed.
Should begin to recognize who we are.
With a supporting our efforts to endeavor.
Much more than we do.
Instead of attempting to compare ourselves,
To others wanting to wish,
For equality and their acceptance.
Only from them to receive rejection.
While they pretend to have their stories told.
Until these stories are told to defend,
The fiction of them sold to sell well!
'Stop your whining.
Afterall,
Haven't we permitted and allowed you...
To entertain us?
And we have yet to deny,
How much we appreciate your talents.
Your abilities and physical skills.
Whenever we appear,
At your events with our giving you...
Standing overations and thunderous,
Enthusiastic applause?
Who is it that shouts how great you are?
Hmmm?
What more do you 'people' want from us?
Money and the showing of gratitude?
What you do for us is priceless.
And besides...
Who paid for the tickets?
Who sat and watch you perform,
With such discipline and grace delivered.
Who taught us to teach the electric slide?
Done with tolerance and patience.
And you have the nerve,
To criticize our patronage?!
How dare you to attempt and try to put us,
In that position!
Haven't we said over and over again,
We enjoy your dignity, discipline...
With unbelievable determination?
Geeessshhh!'
